"Moreover, popular narratives about the end of [legally sanctioned black, U.S slavery] erase[s] the agency of black people themselves.
And, I suppose we can say that if Lincoln did not really free the slaves, he was shrewd enough to recognize that the only hope of winning the civil war resided in pre-aiding the opportunity for black people to fight for their own freedom.”
This is the 4th time I’ve reblogged this.
Q:Please explain Industrialised Racism further I'm not sure what you mean exactly, I would comment on it but I want to be sure I have the jist of it correct. But in terms of University admission in the USA yes this is where I agree with you. But it's not "All us lovely white folk" that are doing that. It's your country, Your country is young relatively speaking, founded on Genocide of natives, never having experienced major destruction and dominated by old white people. Be Angry at your country.
Institutionalized racism: it means the exclusion of certain groups from public and private institutions of education, health, government, law and the arts. So for example, the lack of black women and men in Hollywood that star in leading roles without a “white savior” would be an example of institutionalized racism. Another random example is the world map:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8zBC2dvERM — the world map, they briefly explain WHY its an issue. What you teach a group about themselves is part of institutionalized racism. So beginning education about black people when Europeans arrived in Africa erases the years of history that predate European colonialism. To teach African-Americans their history began on slave ships is meant to degrade and dehumanize black children in the classroom.
Here is the thing about the “all the white people” issue. Lots of people like you, do misunderstand it. When we say, “dammit white people” is because there is still a system in place that you are benefiting from. We know there are nice white people, fuck, half my family is white. But just because you are nice does not mean you are excluded from benefiting from white privilege. It doesn’t mean because you hate the word ‘nigger’ that you get a golden sticker for being a “good white person.”
As mermaidcunt said, “I think it’s unfair to care more about how bad white people look and how they feel rather than care and focus on the cruelty they did 100s-1000s of years ago that still results in murder, racism, and torture today.”
The reality is that there is a system in place that white people benefit from, even in Europe. And when you begin looking hard at society is when it gets scary, especially for white people, because when you recognize your own white privilege you realize that you have done nothing to make life better for people of color. People are experiencing racial hate every day. We are talking about it, but people refuse to listen, they turn the argument around and shape us as the bad guys for bringing it up. Because it disturbs them to think their whiteness has been a ticket to privilege - that they are no better than the slave owners and klan members.
At the end of the day you, as a white person need to accept that when a group of people are saying, “THIS is what we are experiencing, THIS is why we are upset,” you MUST listen. You must accept that perhaps you are doing something wrong, or part of a system that is doing something wrong.
As for racism “fading out”… I highly disagree. And the idea that it is going to “take time” is not alright for me. I am living in this society right now. I should not have to wait to be treated like a human being. I should not have to wait to be given access to quality education and representation in my government.
As I “wait” for racism to calm down, people still wear black face, people still refer to me as ‘ghetto’ even with a college degree. I am still a nigger even if I get a Ph.D.
As I wait for racism to stop, costumes of “geisha girls” and “Indian Princesses” are being sold by the truck full to people who bastardize cultures so they can pretend to be exotic for one night.
As I wait for racism to relax, little black boys are being shot in the streets. Black women are being barred from employment. As I wait, the incaceration of my people is skyrocketing for drugs, although most users are white people. http://healthland.time.com/2011/11/07/study-whites-more-likely-to-abuse-drugs-than-blacks/
I am done waiting. I am done being quiet so white people can live guilt free and walk on sunshine while I wonder if one day it will be MY little brother gunned down in the street because “someone felt threatened.”
I am angry at my country. But I am just as angry at people who refuse to acknowledge a system of oppression, white privilege and when the doors of knowledge are opened, slam them shut in denial.
